Data Champions Conference 2020 - Cancelled

Reluctantly we have had to make the call to cancel the conference for this year, but hope to be able to hold another one towards the end of Term 1 next year.

We have made the decision not to proceed based on the following:

We want to avoid having principals and senior leaders out of schools in a time where they are most likely to be needed at school.
Although to date there have only been 11 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand and all are family transmissions and imported by recent travelers from out-side of New Zealand, this could rise at any stage this week.
Although the conference is well under the threshold of 500 that is generally considered a mass gathering and that the government has requested be cancelled, it is none-the-less a gathering of over 100 people in close proximity with limited opportunity to maintain physical distance, with many flying in from around the country.
The conference, while a great opportunity to build partnerships between schools and learn from each other, is not essential to the running of our schools.

The 2020 New Zealand School’s Data Champions conference will take place towards the end of Term One on Friday 20^th March.

Hosted at the Ministry of Education offices in Wellington, the conference will showcase the best practice happening right across New Zealand schools in using data to make better decisions to positively impact learner outcomes.

One of the keynotes this year will be the Ministry’s Te Rito initiative, now fully budget funded and trialling in some schools. The Te Rito project aims to create a personalised, travelling, life long record of learning for every student that passes through New Zealand’s state schools. Records of learning that travel with the student throughout their schooling will recognise and celebrate each student’s learning progress. They will be holistic, showing strengths and progress across a range of knowledge, skills and capabilities. They’ll identify any need for additional support or extension in an individual student’s learning journey. They will be accessed digitally, giving parents and whānau real-time information on their child’s progress. Governance issues over the use of Educational data will also be covered.

The other keynote will be around how learning stories are being used, as well as brief presentations from Network for Learning (N4L) and some teams from the Ministry who are will be running workshops later in the day on progress mapping (across a broader range of learning – including social and emotional learning).

Please note: we can only support up to three people from each school at this conference in order to allow as many schools as possible attend. Thank you for your understanding with this.

As in 2019, the Data Champions Conference 2020 is by teachers, for teachers. Sharing best practice will again be at the heart of 20^th March event. We are currently looking for people willing to share from both primary and secondary schools, and particularly after people who are willing to run hands-on workshops where people can 'get their hands dirty'.
